Wilkommen aus Deutschland

Wilkommen aus Deutschland
Bamberg Rathaus.

We've already been in Germany for a week, so it's time to catch up on some blogging!

Last Wednesday, we farewelled our Swiss friends and set off to Bad Windsheim in Germany. This was a change from our initial plan, which involved going via Liechtenstein and Legoland Deutschland, but luckily the AirBnb host had told us Legoland would be closed during our visit when it was still early enough for us to cancel that accommodation. As a result, we'd had two bonus days in Switzerland, which we all ended up being very happy about!

Anyway, we stayed two nights in Bad Windsheim to break up the drive between Switzerland and Saxony, where we'd be staying with more friends. We didn't end up doing much in Bad Windsheim — we all needed some downtime after our busy and social days in Switzerland!

Entering Germany. Zoll = Customs (we didn't need to stop).
This building dates back to 1450-1480! Our apartment was behind the right-side window on the middle level.

We went op shopping in Bad Windsheim. Here are some Enid Blyton books in German!

This gorgeous restaurant was across from our accommodation.

On Friday, we left Bad Windsheim and headed for Saxony. We had plenty of time on this drive, so we left the main road in order to get a close-up view of some wind turbines (we've been seeing lots of wind farms in the distance). There were signs near the wind turbines warning of ice being flung from their blades!

We also came across a waterwheel. There was a sign up about it — from memory it was the oldest one in the area, hundreds of years old.

Around lunchtime, we stopped in the town of Bamberg to fill in some more time. As we were driving, I'd been googling potential places to stop. This town had risen to the top because of its awesome Rathaus (town hall)! We ate our sandwiches and had a nice wander around before continuing on our way.

Nice spot to read!
I loved this building with its lace-like window surrounds.
Both sides of the Rathaus were covered in frescoes.
Note this one, where the painting turns into a sculpture jutting out of the wall!
Above the water you can see thin vertical rods suspended from wires. We figured these were for canoe slalom, a sport we watched online during the recent Olympics.

After we left Bamberg we saw a wind turbine being built...

That evening we had an early dinner in Chemnitz before meeting our friends Russ and Ali, and a few others, at the apartment of some of their friends.

B's burger at Superheldenburger (Superhero Burger) in Chemnitz. The bun was black!

We had a special evening there, then headed home to the 300-year-old farmhouse Russ and Ali and their kids live in (and are slowly renovating). Thus began another wonderful stay with friends; more to come in the next posts about what we got up to with them!
