The Story Museum

On Wednesday, while based at our friends Bryce and Nikki's place, we headed into Oxford to visit The Story Museum. Before we got there, though, we stopped at Alice's Shop. This is where the real-life Alice, whom Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland was written for, used to buy sweets! She lived across the road.

Then it was on to The Story Museum. This is a dedicated children's literature centre with galleries documenting the history of British kidlit and famous British children's books, special temporary exhibitions (the current one is about dragons, co-curated by Cressida Cowell!) and regular literary events. It was wonderful!

Our tickets included a 25-minute film about Oxford authors and stories, and access to three galleries: The Whispering Wood (where trees told us ancient stories), The Treasure Chamber (where the Here Be Dragons exhibition was) and The Enchanted Library (where there were rooms and displays featuring famous British children's books). There was hardly anyone else at the museum; we felt like we had it to ourselves!

Partway through our visit, we walked down the street to get lunch from Tesco (a grocery store) on Nikki's advice: they do a deal for a main, a snack and a drink for £4 (~$8 AUD) each. There were lots of yummy options!

Then it was back to the dragon exhibition at The Story Museum...

Let's go to Narnia...

The museum closed before we felt like we'd quite seen everything we wanted to. But that's what happens when we take so long to get going in the mornings... the late nights have been piling up a bit and having an effect! 😅
