Here are some more photos from our wander around Cambridge on Saturday...
The plaque says "Charles Darwin lived here". Our friend Malcolm once lived here too!Are we in Harry Potter?Fudge shop! They make the fudge right here in front of the customers. This is where they roll out the fudge. J bought some chocolate and sea salt fudge. π
A highlight was getting to go into Peterhouse College. This is where Malc once studied, which is why we could visit. He just went in first and said he was a former student, and then they let us in.
Actually, the "colleges" at both Oxford and Cambridge are technically where the students live, not where their classes are, though Malc didn't live there as he was a postgrad student. Only the undergrads (or first-year students?) get to live in the really old buildings, and the others live in newer buildings affiliated with the college... I think... it's all a bit confusing and hierarchical! π
Lucky we were with a Petrean! In we go...Rule number one: You are NOT allowed on the grass. The dining room. This is where the current students actually eat β it was all set up for that day's lunch!Private garden at Peter College. One area was off-limits unless you're a "fellow" (professor). We saw a couple of fellows there!
We also visited a ginormous Waterstones bookstore. It had a massive children's section upstairs where I could have happily spent months reading through all the books from my want-to-read list that I spotted there!
This was the middle grade (9-12yo) section. The other half of the room was YA. Junior fiction and picture books had their own rooms. This is the one Australian children's series we have seen everywhere. They were the ONLY Australian-authored books I could find at the two bookshops we visited south of London. But at this Waterstones I did find several other Australian MG books (by Kate Foster, Sue Whiting, Karen Foxlee, Zana Fraillon and Alison Stegert)...... and a whole shelf of Bluey! This is the shelf where my book would sit if it ever came out in the UK. π
And here we are with our lovely friends. We had never met their boys before, though Malc had met ours when he came to Canada on a work trip just after J was born. We had a great time with them!
A fair few games of chess took place over the weekend. π
