Military History Museum of the Bundeswehr

Military History Museum of the Bundeswehr

On Monday, we headed into Dresden to visit the Military History Museum of the Bundeswehr. We knew we'd never get through it in a day (seems to be a bit of a consistent theme with museums lately), and this was vindicated. We did get (mostly) through the two main floors, which were themed around three main eras of German military history: 1300s to 1914, 1914 to 1945 (the World Wars), and 1945 to today.

It was very interesting to be in a military museum in former East Germany (Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR)) where there was a significant focus on both World Wars (though being on the "losing" side), as well as the post-WW2 division and subsequent reunification.

Armoured vehicles — both western (Bundesrepublik Deutschland (BRD)) and eastern (DDR).
The infamous Soviet Hind (Mil Mi-24) helicopter.
V2 rocket from the very late stages of WW2.
1300-1914 Era.
Evolution of personal protection.
A model of a 47.3m-long railway siege gun called "Dora".
Dora's ammunition — 3.6m long.
The museum had a special Napoleonic Wars exhibit while we were there.
Denazification exhibit.
Personal stories of land mine victims.
We managed to get to most of level 0 and 1.

We saw only a few other visitors at this huge museum during our afternoon there, and it cost only €7 ($11.45 AUD) for a family ticket!
