In Johor Bahru (JB), Malaysia, we are spending four nights on the 33rd floor of a new (maybe three-year-old) apartment building above the R&F Mall. The mall is only half-populated with shops and feels almost deserted during the daytime, though it's slightly livelier at night!
Our two-bedroom apartment — $69 AUD per night! But the kitchen is not meant to be used for cooking (there are no pans or utensils and the stove doesn't work) and there's construction all around, so there are reasons for the bargain price!Nighttime view across to Singapore from our apartment. You can see the new RTS (train) bridge they're building between JB and Singapore. The mall has lots of empty shops. It is very swanky...... unless you look too closely!!We got a few things from Mr D.I.Y., which is like a cross between Bunnings, Supercheap Auto and Kmart. As a bonus while you're shopping at the mall, you can keep your brain active...... though we gave up on this one!The mall below our apartment at night.
On Tuesday, after another relaxing morning, we set out on foot to find lunch and a historic street called Tan Hiok Nee.
The nasi goreng B and I shared for lunch. After seeing the state of the toilets, we were a bit worried we'd get food poisoning (especially since I'd ordered seafood), but all was well!Tan Hiok Nee Street starts at the stone arch on the left. The tall building on the right is a mosque.Tan Hiok Nee Street. The buildings in the background are the apartment towers around the mall where we're staying.A mural on Tan Hiok Nee Street. The Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory is famous for its banana bread. We bought ten pieces...... and thought it was delicious!Watch out for deep open drains! On the way back to our apartment (note the RTS track in progress)...... we looked down at this building and realised it was probably the police station (note the police bikes) and jail (note the barbed wire).
In the evening, the boys went for a swim in the pool at our apartment block...
... and then we got takeaway and turned in for the night. And that was our second day in Malaysia!
