First night in Kyoto

First night in Kyoto
Walking to our AirBnb hotel in Kyoto.

Here's where we're staying in Kyoto. The boys are sleeping on thin mattresses/futons on the tatami mat floor — very Japanese!

There's a kitchen to the left and a bathroom to the right. There's quite a bit more space than we had in the tiny apartment with mezzanine bedroom that we had in Tokyo!

That night, we walked to a nearby restaurant I'd found via Google reviews. Once again we had to make ourselves understood with barely any language in common (we said "arigatou gozaimasu" (thank you) and "oishii" (tasty) a lot!). This time we didn't get exactly what we ordered, but it was yummy anyway!

We sat at a short-legged table on a raised platform. B and I had to hang our legs off the side because we can't handle sitting on our knees for that long and there wasn't enough space to sit cross-legged! All of the serving and cooking was done by a sweet older lady (definitely 80+ we reckon!), and the food was delicious!

This shows the whole restaurant. The door is just behind me.
We think these two might have been related to the cook.
Grilled salmon for F. The fried rice was absolutely delicious, but we had tried to order curry rice!
Rice balls for J. When all else fails to entice him, we just feed him rice! 😅
Here comes our okonomiyaki! It's a Japanese savoury pancake.
Pressing it down...
Letting it cook for a while...
Cracking an egg onto it after flipping it over...
And there it is!
Delicious! The crunchy fried udon noodles were a delight!

I'm hoping we'll be able to go to this restaurant again before we leave Kyoto!
