Benvenuti a Napoli!

Benvenuti a Napoli!

Welcome to Naples!

Today involved an early wakeup and a two-hour drive to Dublin Airport through this gorgeous fog...

... then saying farewell to the orderly identical houses and bright green fields of Ireland...

... and hello to noisy, chaotic Naples! B and I have been to Italy a couple of times before, but not to Naples.

We were quite chuffed that we figured out how to get €1.30pp bus tickets to our accommodation rather than taking the €5pp airport bus or a taxi!
The traffic was nuts! There was a LOT of honking. We waited half an hour for our bus, and even after it came into view it probably took another ten minutes to actually reach the bus stop! To be fair, it was just after 5pm.
Views from the bus window...
... and the last bit of the journey on foot to our AirBnb apartment.
The street through the archway is where our apartment is!
This archway is at the other end of our street.
This bookshop is across from our apartment. There are at least three other bookshops on this street too.
This restaurant is under our apartment. Apparently it's the oldest pizzeria in Naples... it was founded in 1738!
The view from the restaurant balcony. The boys and I did some extensive people-watching while we waited for our dinner.
These two garbage collectors (one male, one female) used a big shovel to scoop up the overflow from the wheelie bins and toss it into the back of the garbage truck. We watched the bookseller across the road close up shop for the day as well.

You can hear a busker playing the trumpet in this video. He's just out of sight behind the fairy-lit balcony. This was a calm moment on the street... other times there were motorbikes (often with helmet-less riders, even child passengers) zipping around the pedestrians or young men yahooing.

Food!
Our first dinner in Naples. Not knowing what size the pizzas would be, we over-ordered and now have a box of leftover pizza in the fridge!
From the English translation of the menu... "Fiordilatte, Cream, Ham, Mushrooms, Basil, Cheese, Extra Virgin Olive Oil." This one was B's and my favourite!
"Mastu Nicola (Pizza born in the 18th century in this place): Pork lard, Sheep Ricotta Mousse, Pecorino Cheese, Basil, Ground Pepper." Salty but quite yummy!
The boys chose this stuffed pizza with salami, multiple cheeses and basil. F liked it; J said it was "edible"!

We're looking forward to exploring more of Naples tomorrow!
